Project by Lorenzo Tognocchi, Tommaso Rossi Fioravanti – Client: Municipality of Akureyri – Competition
Info:
The competition was held with the aim of revitalizing the town center of Akureyri and reconnect Town Hall square and harbor area divided by Highway Number 1, the Ring Road around Iceland, that cuts through the town.
This link has been realized through the creation of a large footbridge rejoining the different areas. It occupies part of the open space around the Culture House and reaches the town centre where four new buildings have been realized. These new buildings occupy vacant lots and hold different functions, like mixed commercial and residential use.
Two walking paths rise from the ground level of these housing block and reach the footbridge that crosses the main road. This wide open space can be an important venue for outdoor leisure time with its small artificial hills covered with grass. These elements, which remind old buildings of local countryside, shelter from northerly winds and hold stairs and lifts to the ground level.
